John E. Sauter, 100, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Boles Funeral Home chapel, in Pinehurst, with the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating.
Mr. Sauter was a 20-year resident of Pinehurst and a former longtime resident of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Sauter; and cousins, Lore Manginelli and Paulette Fahy and her husband, Kevin Fahy.

Obituary for Michael James Fitzpatrick

Michael James Fitzpatrick, 67, of Pinehurst, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Boles Funeral Home, in Southern Pines, with Dr. Al Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Southern Pines. The family will receive friends immediately before the service on Friday, May 31, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Boles Funeral Home.
Mike was born Sept. 11, 1945, in Scottsburg, Ind., to the late Dr. James Sylvan Fitzpatrick and Francis Carolyn Fitzpatrick. He grew up in Portland, Ind., and attended Jay County High School. He attended Indiana University. He later lived in Fort Wayne, Ind., Ohio, Charlotte, and San Ramon, Calif. 
Mike enjoyed playing golf, watching sports, computer games and being with his family and friends. He was employed at Rea Magnet Wire, Fort Wayne, in sales and inventory control before joining Electrical Insulation Suppliers in sales and ­marketing in 1979. 
After 32 years with Electrical Insulation Suppliers, he retired in December 2011. He was a member of Trinity Christian Fellowship, Southern Pines.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Carolyn Nofzinger Fitzpatrick; daughter Michelle Hyatt and her husband, Craig, of Dacula, Ga.; son Sean Fitzpatrick and his wife, Lorie, of San Ramon, Calif.; five grandchildren, Laura, Christine, Cameron, Sophia and Ava; and two brothers, Barry Fitzpatrick, of Denver, and Mark Fitzpatrick of Lebanon, Ind.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Marvin Huff “Dick” Burroughs, 95, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at his home in Pinehurst.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 8, at Christ Fellowship Church, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. James Thyne officiating.
Mr. Burroughs was born March 13, 1918, in Grant County, Ky., to the late John W. and Mamie Huff Burroughs. He was a member of Christ Fellowship Church in Southern Pines.
In addition to his joyful participation in church activities, Mr. Burroughs was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Grand Lodge of F. & A. M. of Ohio. Throughout his nearly 70-year membership in the fraternity of Masons he passionately supported the operations of the Shriners Hospitals for Children through numerous volunteer activities.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Wilma Scroggin Burroughs.
Mr. Burroughs is survived by his daughter, Carnetta Bell, of Foxfire Village; his grandchildren, Denise Graner and her husband, Wesley, and Brian Bell and his wife, Jennifer; and five great-grandchildren, Holden Graner, Cayden Graner, Landen Graner, Benjamin Bell and Lillian Bell.

John H. Grotzinger, 96, of Pinehurst, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Quail Haven Retirement Center, in Pinehurst.
No services are planned at this time.
Mr. Grotzinger was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Ontario, Canada. He served his ­country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an engineer at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 35 years until his retirement in 1981. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Grotzinger, in 2005.
He is survived by a son, Jerry Grotzinger, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a daughter, Ann Hargreaves, of Uitenhage, South Africa; three granddaughters, Leah Grotzinger, Robyn Jacobs and Tarryn Jonker; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Jonker; and a sister, Millicent Wisnom, of San Carlos, Calif.

Obituary for Robert Elwood Anderson

The “Pinehurst Fox,” Robert Elwood Anderson, 95, of Pinehurst, died Sunday, May 26, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Boles Funeral Home, in Pinehurst. A reception will follow after the service until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Fox was born Dec. 9, 1917, to the late Albert and Clara Pettys Anderson, in Chicago. He graduated from Morgan Park High School, where he was the singer for the band.
In 1937 he married the love of his life of 69 years, Alice. Robert worked alongside his uncle in the family business, ANCO Corp., in Gary, Ind., until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served proudly and honorably in World War II.
After the war he embraced a successful career in construction and then high rise management, and was instrumental in the introduction of drywall to replace plaster walls in Boca Raton and Delray Beach, Fla.
He retired in 1976 to Pinehurst, where he founded the 70-men golf group called “The Foxes,” which is still in existence. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the company of the Foxes and many friends, finding good in everything he touched, promoting good will and fostering contagious optimism in all who were blessed with his friendship.
He was an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout leader through his life and was a member of the Methodist Church, attending The Village Chapel and Trinity Christian Church. In 1986 he managed again until he retired at 90 years old and all the time enjoying music, a lifelong passion.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Art, John and Warren; his sisters, Dorothy and Laura; and his most beloved wife, Alice K. Anderson.
He is survived by his daughters, Joy Foster and Linda Brown (Monty); grandchildren, Lisa Spinner and Grant Spinner Jr. (Carla); great-grandchildren, Brianna Spinner, Austin Spinner and Justin Wiest (Farryn); and many nieces and nephews; as well as his favorite cat, “Boy.”

Tula Verlene Maness, 81, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Brown’s Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Michael Parenti and the Rev. James Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Funeral Home, in Robbins.
Ms. Maness was a native of Moore County. She worked in the textile industry for more than 40 years. She loved living in the Robbins area and caring for her home. Tula enjoyed cooking, gardening and sharing those skills with others.
She was a daughter of the late Dock Early and Voda Catherine Brown Maness.
Tula is survived by her sister, Jean Purvis, of Robbins.

Jack Craig, 83, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Pine Rest Cemetery, Robbins, with the Rev. Robert Craig officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Kennedy Funeral Home, in Robbins and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Craig, in Robbins.
Mr. Craig was born in Sanford and lived in Durham. Jack loved baseball and played American Legion for several teams. He signed with the New York Yankees organization and was later released due to a knee injury. He owned and operated auto parts businesses in Robbins and Pittsboro for many years.
He was a son of the late Leonard and Carrie Pendergrass Craig, and was preceded in death by sister Jane Craig Creery.
Jack is survived by his wife, June Melvin, of the home; daughter, Vickie Craig Odom, of Robbins; son, Ted and wife, Sandra, of Robbins; grandchildren, Brandi Craig, of Eagle Springs, Craig Odom, of Statesboro, Ga., Bethany Craig Barden, of Burlington, and Megan Odom Porter, of Riverside, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Carter Porter, Baine and Andrea Barden; sisters, Lillian Poe, of High Point, Doris Raper, of High Point, Carrie Lynn Smith, of Sanford, and Shirley Mutter, of Durham; and brother, Bill Craig, of Lake Junaluska.

Jeffrey T. Chandler Jr., 35, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Jamestown, N.Y., died of natural causes Friday, June 7,2013, at his residence.
He was born July 20, 1977 in Jamestown, N.Y., attended Jamestown High School and had been employed at Steve's Auto in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as various businesses in the Jamestown area.
Jeff was a loving and caring person with a special love for his grandmother. He had a great sense of humor, loved to cook, and go camping. He was a big man with a big heart.
Jeff was survived by his father, J. Todd Chandler Sr. (Kim), of Aberdeen, and his mother, Cynthia Widrig (Ronald), of Jamestown, N.Y., a sister, Jennifer Chandler, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and his longtime friend, Tina Pryll, of Cleveland, Ohio.
Services will be private. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg, N.Y.
Because of his love for dogs, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd., Jamestown, NY 14701.

Michael Kevin Nash, 57, of Carthage, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Mr. Nash was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, to John Nash and Patricia (Younker) Jones.
A graveside service will be held at the family cemetery at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at 300 Union Pines Drive in Carthage.
Mr. Nash is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carol Sue Nash; his mother, Patricia Jones and bonus dad, Joseph Jones; four daughters, Tracy Butram and husband, Troy of Ohio, Tammy Jones, of Wadesboro, Melissa Brabant, of Carthage, and Shannon Welly, of Carthage; sisters, Vaunita Lynn and husband, Dan, Angela Sharpe and husband, Greg, Barbara Beltrami and husband, John, and Helene Jones; brothers, Lee Jones and wife, Barbara, and Billy Jones and wife, Kathy; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Nash was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Kelley Nash, in 2005 and a sister, Susan Nash.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst.

Janice Barga, 91, of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at her daughter’s home.
She was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Hollansburg, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Georgia Ethel (Mitchell) Hough; and husband, Dr. John Barga.
She is survived by her children, Susan Hillman (Springfield), Caryl Barga and John Barga; grandchildren, Brian (and Kristeen) Hillman, Brock (and Brandelyn) Hillman, Rick Barga, Mark Barga and Jake Waits; and great-grandchildren, Darian and Damian Hillman.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, O.E.S Versailles, and Altrurian Club (Troy), of which she was a past president. She loved ballroom dancing with John, playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Burial will be held at Miami Memorial Park, Covington, Ohio, at the family’s convenience.

Obituary for James J. McGillan

James Joseph McGillan, 71, of Pinehurst, formerly of McLean, Va., died Saturday, June 8, 2013.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 15, at Sacred Heart Church, in Pinehurst.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Boys Town (http://www.boystown.org/) or St. Jude’s Hospital for Children (http://www.stjude.org).
Mr. McGillan was born Nov.12, 1941, in Manchester, N.H. Growing up, he loved playing baseball, especially in the pitcher position, his wonderful coaches, his Boy Scout adventures, riding his bike with his dog Sandy balanced on the handle bars and exploring the hills around Manchester. He often fondly remembered his days as a cashier at Champagne Supermarket, his paper route and the other kids he employed to help with deliveries and his days of service to his church as an altar boy.
He graduated from Bishop Bradley High School in Manchester, N.H. in 1959, earned a BEE in electrical engineering from the Catholic University of America School of Engineering and Architecture in 1963, and graduated cum laude from the Catholic University of America Columbus Law School in 1966. During law school he served as articles editor of the Law Review, winner of the first- and second-year moot court competitions, and was law clerk for a year at Nixon, Mudge, Rose, Guthrie & Alexander on Broad Street in New York and in its Washington, D.C., office.
Mr. McGillan began his legal career as a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy, Judge Advocate General Corps (1967-1969). He was stationed in Newport, R.I.; Charleston, S.C. (Trial Counsel 1967-68); Danang, Republic of Vietnam (Trial Counsel 1968-69); and Washington, D.C. (Appellate Counsel 1969). He was awarded the Navy Commendation medal with a combat V for valor for his service in Vietnam.
Following his naval service, Mr. McGillan, a tireless entrepreneur, enjoyed a long and varied career in law and business. He was a partner at Pepper and Corrazzini (1976-1983), where he specialized in corporate transactions and telecommunications matters including the trial of comparative hearings before the FCC; Of Counsel to Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Heine, Underberg, Manley & Casey (1983-1987) in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in common carrier, cellular telephone, broadcast and other communications issues as well as contractual transactions; vice chairman, secretary and general counsel at Private Transatlantic Telecommunications System, Inc. (PTAT, formerly Tel-Optik, Ltd.) (1984-1989); and vice chairman, secretary and general counsel, Med-Tel International (1994-2004).
PTAT was the company which, together with its joint venture partner, Cable &Wireless plc of the United Kingdom, successfully designed, constructed and laid the first privately owned transatlantic fiber optic telecommunications cable connecting the United States and England with spurs to Ireland and Bermuda.
Mr. McGillan acted as principal negotiator and draftsman of the $ 350 million cable manufacturing contract and supervised the construction of the $ 30 million terrestrial system between Sea Girt, N.J., and New York City, and together with the company chairman Ron Coleman, successfully negotiated sale of the company to U.S. Sprint in August 1989.
Med-Tel International installed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines in rural areas in the United States and the United Kingdom, and transmitted the images to a central viewing site telephonically to be read by board-certified, fellowship trained radiologists on high definition television monitors. With Chairman and CEO Mr. Ronald Coleman, Mr. McGillan built, operated and managed more than 22 MRI clinics in the United States and 11 in the United Kingdom.
He moved to Pinehurst in 2005, where, with Charlie Holbrook, he co-founded The Voice of Moore County news website in 2008 and the Charles St. James E-book publishing company in 2010. He was a member of the Pinehurst Water Committee, the Moore County Republican Mens Club, the Military Officers Association of America, and a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed local politics, golf and “Star Trek.”
Mr. McGillan was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Gertrude Martin McGillan; his brother, Francis Edward McGillan Jr., and his sister, Jean A. Sweeney.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Kenny McGillan, of Pinehurst; their daughters, Jennifer and Maureen, of New York City; and his sisters, Marguerite Donovan (Leo), of Andover, Mass., and Sr. Marilyn McGillan A.P.B., of Watertown, N.Y.

Gale was a Moore County native and until her illness owned a hair salon in Aberdeen.
