Obituary for Francis R. Russo
Francis Robert Russo, M.D., 89, of Janesville, Wis., and Pinehurst, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, peacefully at home in Wisconsin, surrounded by his five children and loving caregivers.
Dr. Russo was born July 20, 1923, in New York, the son of Giovanni and Maria Russo. He was a graduate of Horace Mann School, Riverdale, N.Y., class of 1940. He attended Columbia University and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons-Columbia University in 1947 as part of the Navy ROTC program.
As a resident physician he furthered his surgical training at Syracuse University, Roosevelt Hospital NYC, and University Hospital-UW Madison, where he participated in cancer research. He served during the Korean War based in Stuttgart, Germany, as Army First Lieutenant, Medical Corps at Fifth General Army Hospital and then returned to his University of Wisconsin Residency program.
Upon completing his fellowship there, he returned East to establish a surgical practice in Fairfield Conn. In 1960, he joined the Pember-Neusem clinic in Janesville and practiced there for over 37 years. In addition to his role as surgeon, he acted as chairman of the clinic and oversaw the construction of the renamed and then newly built Janesville Riverview Clinic. He also served Mercy Hospital as Staff President.
Frank was not only a physician by profession; he was also a healer by nature. He felt fortunate to have practiced medicine in the days when the doctor and patient enjoyed a singular relationship. He took great care to spend quality time with each patient before, during and after surgical procedures to ensure their ease of mind, comfort and well-being throughout the surgical process.
He directed his special hands and focus to the growing field of thoracic surgery and implemented state-of-the-art approaches in Janesville as they developed worldwide.
Outside of his role as physician, Frank lived life large. As a young man he was a member of the Varsity Fencing Team at Columbia University and also developed a keen eye for photography. Later in life he became an avid downhill skier, earning a Gold Medal in a NASTAR ski race at the young age of 68. He chose Vail, Colo., as a second home, where he happily instructed countless young men and women how to gracefully ski down the mountain slopes. He last skied when he was 85, still leading the way.
He enjoyed traveling the world with Nancy, his remarkable wife of 63 years, and would smile broadest when he stood on a beach somewhere taking in the salty sea air which reminded him of childhood summers spent on Rockaway Beach, Long Island, N.Y. Passionately athletic, Frank excelled at tennis, “played at” golf and enjoyed sailing Long Island Sound serving as crew on his son Rob’s sailboat.
He served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and was a member of the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church in Janesville. He was also a board member of the Wisconsin Senior Men’s Golf Association. Frank took great pride in his 60 -plus year association with the Wisconsin State Medical Society.
Frank will be remembered and missed by those who knew and loved him well for his youthful enthusiasm, compassionate nature, sparkling eyes, impish smile and his fierce and mighty will. He remained young at heart always.
Frank was recently predeceased by his wife, Nancy Kraffert Russo (February 2013); and his siblings (who knew and loved him as “Frankie”) Rose Russo Russo, Adelaide Russo Rachun and John Russo, M.D.
He is survived by his children, Christiana Russo Maxwell (Richard), F. Robert Russo, Jr., Richard Kraffert Russo (Kathy), Thomas Adrian Russo (Georgina) and Anne Russo Goodwin (Matthew); his grandchildren, Christopher Russo, Meredith Russo, Richard Russo, Jr., Michael Russo, Erin Russo, Robert Goodwin and Benjamin Goodwin; sister in-law Matilda Russo and many loving nieces and nephews.
A life celebration for both Nancy and Frank will be held on May 11, at the Janesville Country Club at 4:30 pm. An open tribute will commence at 5 p.m., comments and shared remembrances will be most welcome. Refreshments immediately following.
Condolence expressions are suggested as a donation in the name of Francis Robert Russo, M.D., to the “Giovanni and Maria Russo Memorial Fund,” Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the American Cancer Society.
